Chris Addison - The Time is Now, Again @ Perth Concert Hall

Well, it wasn’t exactly a packed Concert Hall but those who did turn up will certainly be glad they did.

To be fair, it was a decent crowd considering Addison isn’t really anyone’s favourite comedian. Long gone are the days when a Mock of the Week regular was enough to guarantee a sold-out show; victims of our own success perhaps, as over the last few years we have been able to attract a wealth of top comedy talent to the Fair City.

Addison himself described his audience as a ‘circle of life’ and looking around the hall I saw what he meant – the crowd was made up of all ages, no doubt attracted by his variable TV work.

Doing his own warm up, he started the evening with a rather amusing story about his last visit to Tayside and in particular, an evening spent in Dundee. Addison had clearly done his homework with various references to local news and landmarks.

It was certainly a good way to win over the locals but after the initial ten minutes Addison started to stumble and stutter and soon reverted back to his well-rehearsed topical material.

Addison delivered a lecture-style of stand-up that covered a wide range of topics, in parts very political but never really pushing boundaries.

He had great stage presence, even if he moved across it like a rather camp string puppet.

After the interval, Addison gave us a near-perfect hour of comedy covering everything from tattoos to immigration, rolling from one topic to another without ever breaking the flow of his well-crafted show.

Overall, a very enjoyable evening: this may well have been my first full Chris Addison experience but on this merit, it will not be my last.

The Improvised Musical

No Shoes Theatre – The Improvised Musical

Ok not just comedy, why it's more of a theatre show packed with laughs but hats off to them for asking us along. Improvised theatre comedy isn't easy so I’ve allot of admiration for anyone that attempts it. It's a very happy affair from the off and even though the young cast wear over the top theatre school smiles I do genuinely believe they're having a great time. The show is an innocent romp in to the unknown, it's a fun family friendly show that delivers something on all levels. I don't like to single anyone out but I have to mention the very funny fast thinking of Scott Gilmore who had us laughing throughout. Ok a good bit away from who's line is it anyway standards but the way they set out to make a completely different show everyday has to be commended. Comedy wise it's a 3 star show but I'd expect plenty of 4 stars from the more theatre reviewing press.

It's a lovely show that I'm sure will have people returning time after time

Joe Fairbrother - Characters @ Just the Tonic - Caves

Joe Fairbrother - Characters

What a lovely little show from character comedian Joe Fairbrother. You
join him at the local village hall where he welcomes you "the locals"
like he really does know you asking after family and Friends etc. Joe plays a
range of characters from a health and safety officer to a female B&B owner.
The characters all follow the same format some perhaps maybe
better than others but in general all very good. I'd really like to
see Joe take more risks, some of the characters are very lovable and
I could see them getting away with allot more, you only need to look at
the likes of little Britain to see what can be done.
I liked the radio segments in between character's and especially the
local disco stuff but I do feel the writing needs work. In general we
need more laughs, more punchlines at the end of each character and
just a bit more risk.
This is however a bloody good show performed by a bloody good
character comic. I've no doubt he will go from strength to strength and I already look forward to his 2012 offering.

The Ginge, The Geordie and The Geek - Best Of 09/10

The Ginge, The Geordie and The Geek

This is the best of show from 09/10 so if you had the pleasure of
seeing them in previous years you'll no doubt want to come back and
relive happy memories. If however you're new to the G,G,G experience
then my god you're in for a treat.

The show starts and to be honest the first 3 sketches are maybe a little lame but the lads soon get things going at an unbelievable pace.

It's well written and well acted out, simple jokes but so affective,
comedy is all about making you laugh and this show does that throughout.
With so many sketches you soon forget some of the great characters
but a wonderful montage at the end soon has you reminiscing.

I loved the show so much that with the sounds of 80's power ballads
still ringing in my ears I found myself back at the box office working
out my next visit. Seriously I'd recommend this show to everyone.
The Ginge, The Geordie and The Geek are unmissable.

The Ginge, The Geordie and the Geek
  New Show
Very good show once again from the three G’s but after watching the best of I do think this new show was maybe a little over shadowed. You get everything you’d expect from the boys but I just think previous years had more big laughs. It’s good to see more technology in the show as I really believe they need to do more in the way of presentation, don’t get me wrong I love the simple style they have adopted but let’s face it a bit more will only add to the pleasure. The main problem for me is that one of the main sketches isn't’t that funny, not for the amount of time it’s given anyway. Go see the boys @ just the tonic at the caves, you won’t regret it.

Ray Time in the Day Time – Gilded Balloon @ 2.30pm

Ray Time in the Day Time

Shambolic wannabe TV host Ray Green is back in Edinburgh and this time he’s looking for a TV deal but not everything goes to plan.

You join Ray for a live stream of his show Ray Time in the Daytime, What could possibly go wrong? In a word, everything

It’s a very amusing show that has a smile on your face from the minute Ray walks on the stage, funny throughout with some great video work that shows Dave Gibson as more than just a great character comedian.

The show needs edited in parts, for example the green room video sequences drag on for a bit too long, With a bit more quality material this really has the making of something special.

This show has a bit of everything, something for everyone no matter what your comedy preference. It’s a great fun show that’s well worth a viewing.

ComedyReviewer Tips for edfringe 2011

Sean Walsh

Great show in 2010 and looks to be the next big thing in the world of comedy. Caught him down in London early this year and I thought his material and delivery was top drawer. Can’t wait to see him again

The Ginge, The Geordie, and the Geek
Best of 09/10

First saw them in 2009 after being sent to review for the Edinburgh Comedy Award.

Blown away by how good the comedy was, simple but effective. Delighted by this year’s best of offering, finally people get to see what I’ve been talking about for the last 2 years

Josh Widdicombe

Brilliant Young Stand up, another I’d expect big things from. This will be his first solo edfringe show so really looking forward to seeing what he offers up

Gareth Richards

I remember him from the free fringe, he was good then so I’d expect him to be great now. nominated for best newcomer last year so expect big things from this new show

Vikki Stone

She is the one everyone is talking about, I’ve been hearing great things about Vikki, looking forward to seeing her show Vikki Stone & the Flashbacks – Big Neon Letters

Dom Joly - Edinburgh - Queens Hall

This is not stand up comedy, This is Joly,
Dom Joly

To be honest it’s more of a book launch than a comedy show.
We set upon the Queens Hall in Edinburgh for what we assumed would be a near sell out to see this comedy legend, Yeah Legend, well he is in my eyes anyway. Trigger Happy made Beadles About look like kids TV, so simple but so affective and just so dam good.
It’s nostalgic look back at the comedy career of Dom Joly, amusing throughout but never really hitting the mark. I guess Trigger Happy wasn’t that popular in the Scottish capital as the audience numbers were disappointing to say the least, at over £20 for a show that was sold as not stand up, you can’t really blame people for staying away, i myself didn't know what to expect.
This show was decent but nothing more, I'd such high hopes for some wacky Trigger Happy stunts like a guy in the audience with a big phone or a fake security guard on the door but the nearest we got was a polar bear making a brief appearance on stage and even that wasn’t as good as it sounds.

Dom joly has thrown this show together and quite frankly it shows, disappointing all round and value for money it ain't. It hasn’t put me off though, jolys next adventure will be a Hollywood film and I for one can’t wait.

Russell Kane – Smokescreens & Castles

Edinburgh comedy award winner Russell Kane, is he any good?

A capacity audience of comedy punters young and old all packed in for what they hoped would be a great night of comedy, the venue was at bursting point and there was an amazing buzz about the place. What a great mix you get at his gigs, from the following he’s picked up from I’m a celeb and freaks like me to the comedy snobs who like the intellectual humour and a taste of award winning comedy. So is it good? YES, I can assure you it is. Let’s face it Kane always delivers a fine show and a fine performance but this show is something a bit special. It’s a fantastic bit of comedy writing but even more so in performance. For a comedian who doesn’t tell jokes you get laughs a plenty and throughout. Storytelling with more, far more and a stage show with, well just him but the way he prances and dances around the stage you soon forget this is simply just stand up. His energy rubs off and by the end you feel as sweaty as he looks. Quality show with a capital Q.
